Market House

The Square, Castlepollard.

Following extensive work by Castlepollard Local Development with support from several agencies, we successfully secured an investment of just under €4M for a number of local projects. This funding was announced in November 2022 and background work is already underway to get these started.

The Market House building is an important historical landmark in a central location, but it needs attention to breathe new life into it - and we are delighted to be doing just that. The funding announced  will allow us to extend and refurbish this landmark building.

The original Market House was built c. 1815. It was rebuilt in c. 1926 having been burnt to the ground by the Black and Tans a few years earlier. The building has served as a market house, a courthouse, a town hall, a temporary morgue (following the "Castlepollard Massacre"), a fire station and library. Once renovation works are completed, it will serve a new purpose as a tourism and community hub.
