St Michael’s National School has been part of Castlepollard’s community for generations, with a history stretching back to 1848, when local parish priest Fr Walter Murtagh established a Catholic school for the children of the town.

The original school, located on Church Street, provided separate classrooms for boys and girls and later expanded to include an infant school. As Castlepollard grew, so too did the school, with the boys’ and girls’ schools eventually amalgamating in 1970 to form the co-educational St Michael’s National School.

A new school building was constructed on Water Street in 1965, on land generously donated by Donal and Mrs Slattery. Pupils moved into their new school in the spring of 1966, and St Michael’s continues to serve the children and families of Castlepollard today.
