Standing proudly on The Square in the heart of Castlepollard, St Michael’s Church is one of the town’s most distinctive historic landmarks. This Church of Ireland building dates from the early 19th century and was built as part of the development of Castlepollard into the elegant Georgian market town we see today.

With its elegant spire, Gothic Revival architecture, stone detailing and distinctive tower, the church forms a striking focal point at the centre of The Square. Inside, visitors can discover beautiful stained-glass windows, marble memorials, decorative plasterwork, historic wooden furnishings and a Bevington organ. The church also contains memorials dating from before the present building, including one commemorating Catherine Gunning from 1751, believed to have been transferred from the earlier church at Killafree.

The tower clock, installed in 1887 in memory of the 4th Earl of Longford, is another fascinating feature of the building and adds to its rich historical character.

Today, St Michael’s remains an important part of Castlepollard’s heritage and community. The church and its graveyard offer a quiet opportunity to appreciate the town’s architecture, history and connection with the Pollard family, whose influence helped shape Castlepollard.
