Just a short drive from Castlepollard, Mullaghmeen Forest is a wonderful destination for walkers, nature lovers and anyone looking to escape into the countryside. Covering around 400 hectares, it is home to Ireland’s largest planted beech forest, along with Scots pine, Sitka spruce, noble fir and an interesting collection of native trees.

The forest has an extensive network of waymarked trails, including three looped walks and an accessible multi-access trail. The Red Trail climbs to the summit of Mullaghmeen, the highest point in County Westmeath, with beautiful views north towards Lough Sheelin and County Cavan.

Mullaghmeen also offers a fascinating glimpse into the area’s past. Along the trails you can discover the remains of famine-era field walls, a traditional booley hut and historic flax pits, reminders of the people and rural industries that once shaped this landscape.

With woodland walks, picnic areas, a car park and trails to suit different abilities, Mullaghmeen makes an ideal half-day outing from Castlepollard and a peaceful introduction to the natural beauty of North Westmeath.
