Located on Castlepollard’s historic Square, is a distinctive water sculpture, featuring four swans representing the Children of Lir. Created by Westmeath sculptor Dolores Nally, the sculpture celebrates one of Ireland’s best-known legends and its strong connection with the local area.

The sculpture sits within the landscaped town green, surrounded by the Georgian buildings of the Square. A multilingual plaque beside the installation tells the story of the Children of Lir, connecting Castlepollard’s town centre with the mythology and landscape of the surrounding area.

According to the ancient story, the four children of Lir were transformed into swans by their stepmother Aoife, spending part of their long exile on nearby Lough Derravaragh.

The Square was once an important source of water for the town, with traditional pumps and wells serving the local community before the area evolved into the landscaped space seen today.
